What will you do?

In the role of a Complex Care Healthcare Assistant, you will have a vital responsibility in delivering compassionate, individualised care to people facing a variety of complex health challenges. This includes supporting those with long-term health conditions, neurological disorders, and physical disabilities, all of which require dedicated and specialised attention. You will work closely with each individual, following tailored care plans that promote their comfort, independence, and overall well-being. Your contribution will make a meaningful difference in their daily lives, enabling them to manage their health conditions with dignity and respect.

  • Personal Care: Assist patients with activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, dressing, grooming, and mobility support, always ensuring dignity and respect.

  • Complex Health Care Support: Provide care for individuals with complex conditions such as tracheostomy, neurological disorders, respiratory issues, palliative care needs, post-operative care, oxygen therapy, epilepsy, PEG/NG, stoma, spinal injury and many more.

  • Medication Assistance: Support with the administration of prescribed medications as outlined in care plans and MAR chart.

  • Health Monitoring: Regularly monitor vital signs; pulse, temperature, and oxygen levels. Report any changes or concerns to the clinical team.

  • Rehabilitation and Therapy Support: Assist patients in rehabilitation exercises or physiotherapy sessions as prescribed, encouraging and motivating them to improve their mobility and strength.

  • Infection Control: Adhere to strict infection control and hygiene protocols to ensure patient safety, including proper handling and disposal of waste.

  • Communication: Maintain clear and accurate patient records, documenting all care provided and any changes in the patient’s condition. Provide updates to patients, families, and healthcare professionals as needed.

  • Emotional and Social Support: Offer companionship, emotional support, and a listening ear to patients and their families, fostering a positive and supportive environment.

  • Family Liaison: Communicate effectively with family members to ensure they are informed and involved in the care process.

Essential Qualifications and Skills:

  • Experience: Previous 6 month experience as a Complex Health Care Assistant or in a similar healthcare setting, particularly in the community or with complex care needs, is highly desirable.

  • Personal Care Skills: Ability to provide high-quality personal care to individuals with varied and complex needs.

  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills to liaise with patients, families, and healthcare professionals.

  • Compassionate and Empathetic: A caring, patient, and empathetic approach to care, with a genuine desire to improve the lives of vulnerable individuals.

  • Health Monitoring Skills: Ability to take vital signs and report any changes to the appropriate healthcare team.

  • Flexibility and Reliability: Ability to work independently in the community, with flexibility around working hours, including evenings and weekends.

  • Qualification: A recognized qualification in Health and Social Care (e.g., NVQ Level 2 or 3) is advantageous, but not essential.Enhanced DBS Check: A current DBS check is required for this role.

  • Driving License and Access to a Car: Due to the nature of the role, a full driving license and access to your own vehicle are advantageous but not necessary.

Desirable Skills and Qualifications:

First Aid & CPR Training:

Current certification in First Aid and CPR is beneficial.

Palliative and End-of-Life Care:
Experience or training in palliative or end-of-life care is desirable.

Experience with Specific Conditions:

Experience in managing care for individuals with clinical complex care conditions. A minimum of 6 months of experience in the community is essential.
