Main roles & responsibilities

About the role

We are looking for motivated nurses to assist us with COVID research trials running across East London. You will mainly be assisting the RECOVERY trial, which is designed for people hospitalised with SARS-COV-2. This trial, https://www.recoverytrial.net/, is a national priority study, which led to the discovery that Dexamethasone offers significant improvement in patients receiving oxygen therapy. Within one day of this being reported, Dexamethasone was adopted as standard of care for this patient group, both in the UK and in many countries worldwide. Thus the impact of this trial is bigger than most and is still of critical importance, as it assess the impact of numerous other therapies for people hospitalised with the virus. This role will offer you the opportunity to truly make a difference in the fight against COVID, whilst learning about the role of clinical research in the NHS. You would play an instrumental role within a dynamic, diverse and friendly team, who are motivated by team success.

  • You will be involved in pre-screening potentially eligible patients with the wider COVID research team.
  • Attend ward rounds and assist the medical team in obtaining informed consent and enrolling patients into the trial.
  • If competent to do so, perform venepuncture to obtain blood samples required by the trial.
  • Arrange and assist in the delivery of trial treatments to the clinical area.
  • Administration of intravenous monoclonal antibodies (via a peripheral cannula) and post dose monitoring of patients allocated to these treatment arms. This will not be required for all patients enrolled into the study, as some of the treatments are taken orally and administered by the ward nurses. Relevant monoclonal antibody training will be provided
  • Assist with data entry for the RECOVERY trial and other COVID research as required.
  • You may also be required to assist with other COVID research trials, depending on the needs of the service.”
